Anti-Death Penalty Campaign Newsletter January 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Welcome to our new look Anti-Death Penalty Campaign newsletter - if you are having trouble viewing it please click on the link above to see it as a web page. This month we're focusing on Iran, one of the few countries in the world where child offenders are still executed. Please take action today to help save other juvenile offenders who remain on death row in Iran.

In this newsletter

Take action for a world without executions.

Iraq executions: A brutal lost opportunity

Amnesty International has condemned the recent executions of Saddam Hussein and two of his aides in Iraq.

The organisation has long called for the country's former leaders to be prosecuted for the crimes committed under their rule, but the flawed trial - followed by the violation of the hangings - were lost opportunities for Iraqis to properly hold these men responsible.

Japan: Outcry over Christmas hangings

Japan executed four men on Christmas Day, including two men aged in their seventies. This was a move which was apparently designed to minimise publicity.

Amnesty International Japan, human rights activists, lawyers and Christian communities condemned the executions and restated their calls for the death penalty to be abolished in Japan.

Iran: Take action to save child offenders

Please take action to defend Hossein Gharabaghloo who was sentenced to death for a murder committed when he was 16 years old. The Supreme Court confirmed his death sentence on 13 December last year and he is facing an execution at any time. At least 23 other juvenile offenders are still on death row.

Good news: On 14 January 2007, an Iranian court cleared 19 year old Mahabad Fatehi of pre-meditated murder. She had been sentenced to death for killing a man who had attempted to rape her, but the Supreme Court ordered a retrial after an international campaign to save her life.

Taiwan: Campaign helps keep Chong Deshu alive

Last month we profiled the case of Chong Deshu in Taiwan. His life was under threat after the Minister of Justice signed his execution order.

Australians wrote to the President of Taiwan, as part of an international campaign to halt the execution. Chong Deshu has not been executed and his lawyers are now looking into further appeals.
