Refugees' Human Rights Campaign May 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Hello again! At a time when there are plans afoot to "swap" refugees, when borders are being closed, and when asylum seekers remain stranded, we have even more cause to draw attention to and celebrate World Refugee Day on 20 June. This year’s theme is “The Voices of Young Refugees”, and a week of celebration will begin on 17 June. Let us know of any events and activities planned for your community, and keep a lookout on our website for more information.

Stranded Somali asylum seekers

After years of abandonment - a solution

In 2001 and 2002 boats carrying asylum seekers headed to Australia were turned around and sent back to Indonesia at the request of Australian officials. This month the Australian Government agreed to resettle 120 of these individuals. Find out more.

A need for radical reform

In his recently published discussion paper Returning Failed Asylum Seekers From Australia, refugee expert David Corlett acknowledges there is a need for radical reform in the way Australia handles returning those asylum seekers who have sought our protection. Learn more

I look forward to seeing you at Refugee Week events around the country. The week provides many ways to acknowledge the positive contributions refugees make in our communities, and provides support and a platform for young refugees to have a voice, and for young Australians to be even more actively involved in fostering positive relationships.

We'd love to see pics and hear about your experiences so get in touch with your local Action Centre to see how you can share your pics and articles with us.
