Anti-Death Penalty Campaign Newsletter April 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Welcome to the April issue of our Anti-Death Penalty Campaign newsletter. Last month China's top law enforcement bodies called on the courts and police to lift their standards in death penalty cases.

The Supreme People's Court, the top prosecutor and the public security and justice ministries have reminded judges to pay close attention to the quality of evidence in capital cases and have also indicated they will ban the use of torture and threats to obtain evidence.

We have heard these promises before and yet China still continues to execute more people than the rest of the world combined. Amnesty International will continue our campaign for real improvements in China's death penalty system. Please help us by taking action below.

In this newsletter

Urgent: Stop the execution of Reze Alinejad in Iran

Take action on behalf of Reze Alinejad who has been convicted of murder in Iran, despite only being 17 years old at the time of the offence. Reze also claims he acted in self-defence.

Write a letter today to the Iranian judiciary, reminding them of Iran's responsibilities under international treaties and calling for a halt to the execution and commutation of Reze's sentence.

Update your knowledge

Update your knowledge by reading Amnesty International's fast facts and figures about the death penalty. Watch out for our new statistics due to be released on 27 April.

Help abolish the death penalty in China

Take action in our new online action centre to help abolish the death penalty in China.

More than half of the world's countries have turned their backs on the death penalty, recognising it as a cruel and inhuman punishment and a violation of basic human rights.

However, each year thousands of people are executed in a relatively small number of countries and thousands more sentenced to death. China alone executed at least 3,400 people in 2004 although the true figure is suspected to be much higher.

Take action: Help abolish the death penalty in China.
