Stop Violence Against Women Campaign April 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Welcome to the April issue of the Stop Violence Against Women Campaign newsletter!

We'd like to send a big congratulations to more than 100 human rights activists who hosted International Women's Day parties last month. Congratulations also to Sue, Ann and Leoni who were winners of the online trivia quiz.

While some participants are still to return their evaluation forms, those who have replied collected more than 500 appeal letters to help stop violence against women. Thank you!

Global Day for Darfur

The systematic use of rape as a weapon of war towards women and girls, to some as young as eight, is happening on a daily basis in Darfur, Sudan. This is a crime against humanity.

Global Day for Darufur is on 29 April. Please help sound the alarm over rape and sexual violence in Darfur by sending a clear message to world leaders that women and girls must be protected.

We'll bring you more information and news on this issue in next month's newsletter.

Google Earth reveals Sudan atrocities

Google Earth and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum have just launched an online map which shows damaged villages and refugee camps in Darfur. Take a look at the map.

Call for justice in Mexico

Five years on and Ines Fernandez Ortega and Valentina Rosendo Cantu are still waiting for justice. The two women, who belong to the Tlapaneca Indigenous community, were raped by members of the Mexican army in February and March 2002 respectively in the state of Guerrero, Mexico.

Take action in our new Action Centre to call for justice for these two women.

Good news for Jamaica

Amnesty International's Secretary General Irene Khan wrote a letter to the Prime Minister of Jamaica last month, welcoming recent improvements to strengthen efforts to stop violence against women in Jamaica.

Just three friends

One in three women around the world will experience violence in her lifetime but three in three people can do something about it.

Please help the campaign and forward this newsletter on to at least three of your friends, encouraging them to sign up for the Stop Violence Against Women Campaign.
