Refugees' Human Rights Campaign June 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Yes, this month's newsletter is a little early to give you time to make plans for World Refugee Day on Wednesday 20 June. While it is a time for celebration, it is unfortunately still necessary that we discuss and take action against policies that have created Australia's unfair shores.

In this newsletter

A time to celebrate refugees in Australia

Refugee Week 2007 (17-24 June) will coincide with World Refugee Day on 20 June. Keep an eye out for events in your local area and join in the celebrations.

Please also use this time to talk with your friends, colleagues and family about the positive contribution refugees make to our community and the unfair way Australia treats some of these refugees.

After more info? Want to share it with others? Need to convince a sceptic? Check out our brand new fact sheets and case studies or contact your local Action Centre to get physical copies of the new campaign kit.

New campaign kit launched

We've just launched our new Unfair Shores Campaign Kit for Refugee Week. The kit provides information and resources on the campaign and also on topics related to refugees.

Tips and hints are also provided for how people can support refugees through campaign stalls. Find out more.

Refugee photo exhibition online

We're also very proud to bring you an online version of the photo exhibition 'Shadowland'. The beautiful images tell the stories of four refugees living in Australia on Temporary Protection Visas. Find out more.

From Nauru to the High Court

Seven Rohingya asylum seekers detained on Nauru have lodged a case in the High Court of Australia against the Australian Government.

It is alleged Australia is ignoring its legal obligations in the handling of these protection applications. We'll monitor this unprecedented case and bring you any updates.

Take action now so that these asylum seekers do not have to endure lengthy detention on Nauru whilst awaiting their court proceedings.

No end in sight for Nauru detention

The deal between the Australian and Nauru Governments relating to detention of Australia's asylum seekers, arriving by boat on Nauru, will end on 30 June 2007.

It appears this will not herald an end to Australia's practice of detention on Nauru as refurbishment of one of the detention centres is currently under way with a planned capacity for 500 detainees. Find out more.

I hope you have a great Refugee Week! Spread the word and don’t forget to share your photos, funny stories, good news stories or event wrap-ups - however big or small - with your local Action Centre, and keep an eye on our website for more updates.
