Welcome to the July update for the Stop Violence Against Women campaign.

This month we can report on some genuine progress in parts of our international campaign with some good news for individuals. Also we hope you will join us in calling on the Australian Government to respect Indigenous human rights when addressing the urgent problem of violence against Indigenous children.

US Congressional Committee passes "Comfort Women" resolution

The US Foreign Affairs Congressional Committee has passed a "comfort women" resolution sending a strong message to the Japanese Government. The bill calls on the Government of Japan to "formally acknowledge, apologise, and accept historical responsibility in a clear and unequivocal manner for its Imperial Armed Force's coercion of young women into sexual slavery."

Amnesty International urges the US House of Representatives to adopt the bill unanimously and expediently. AI is calling on all governments, including the Australian Government to pass similar resolutions. Read more.

Take action!

Take action to ensure human rights are respected in plans to address violence against Indigenous children.

The Federal Government's plan to address violence against Indigenous children must be national in focus and developed in consultation with Indigenous people and organisations already working to address these human rights violations.

Gender bills passed into law in Sierra Leone

Last week's passage of a law in Sierra Leone outlawing domestic violence and establishing the rights of women when it comes to inheritance and the registration of customary marriages is an important step forward in improving the status of women and ensuring greater protection for women and girls against violence.
