Dear friend,

I would like to tell you about the latest development relating to
Amnesty International Australia's campaign to end internet
repression in China.

Yahoo! have just offered compensation to the families of two
dissidents currently serving 10 years each in Chinese prisons
for their peaceful use of the internet.

A case brought against internet giant Yahoo! for being complicit
in the imprisonment and torture of the two men, Shi Tao and Wang
Xiaoning, has been settled out of court. This comes just one week
after a US Congress Committee was very critical of Yahoo!'s
action in Shi Tao's case.

Yahoo!, Microsoft, Google, Baidu and Alibaba all actively assist
the Chinese Government's complex system of internet repression.

Paying compensation is not going to release Tao or Xiaoning and
it is not going to protect other Chinese people from a similar
fate if they express their opinions online.

We believe these major I.T. companies must act humanely and should
speak out against practices that endanger and abuse the human
rights of peaceful internet users.

Thank you for adding your name to this campaign, clearly there is
much work to be done and your ongoing support is needed and
appreciated. More information and actions for you to take will
be featured on our website as the Olympic Games draw nearer.
