You may have heard the good news this week that the Australian Government has committed $5 million to the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Your immediate support was instrumental in this increase of funds for the people of the DRC. In a matter of days over 400 of you added your name to our petition to the Government to strengthen Australia’s assistance.
But the situation remains volatile. Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children still face violence, displacement and hunger. We need to maintain the pressure on the international community to address this unfolding humanitarian disaster.
Amnesty International has joined with other organisations to press the UN Human Rights Council for a Special Session on the current crisis.
And we are immediately sending our researchers to western Uganda to hear and report back on the testimonies of refugees and human rights defenders who have fled the fighting.
Thank you once again for your quick response to this urgent situation. It is only with your support that we can rapidly address human rights violations in the DRC and all around the world.
Yours sincerely,
Claire Mallinson
