Dear friend,

Foreign journalists have experienced a hint of the regime of censorship that China's population lives under.

While international pressure has resulted in an apology from the IOC for assuring unrestricted media access and the Chinese authorities have permitted more sites to be accessed within the Press Centre, the majority of China's citizens continue to be denied basic information on human rights and democracy.

Hamdan trial unfair

The military jury has begun deliberations in Salim Hamdan's trial by military commission. Salim Hamdan's defence lawyers remain frustrated.

Rules favour the prosecution. Key defence evidence is deemed ‘classified’ and is not provided, while hundreds of pages of evidence have been delivered to Hamdan’s lawyers just days before the trial, hampering an effective defence.

Yahoo! rejects human rights

At its global Annual General Meeting on 1 August, shareholders voiced concern over the company’s human rights record. At the same time, they voted down two proposals on human rights and internet censorship.

Profit and self-interest continue to dominate decision-making by the major internet companies, while their actions continue to connect them to human rights violations.

Free Ye Guozhu

Ye Guozhu's prison sentence has been extended by Chinese authorities until the Olympics are over to stop him speaking out.

He was tried in secret and sentenced to four years in jail for “picking quarrels and stirring up trouble”. His ‘crime’ was to apply for permission to protest after his home and restaurant were demolished to make way for the Olympics.

Refugee rights success!

Congratulations to the Rudd Government for continuing to address the unfair treatment of asylum seekers. The proposed changes to mandatory detention are a welcome step along the path to fulfilling our international obligations.

And congratulations to all of you - it is the hard work and dedication of rights activists that has made this change happen. Thank you.
