Celebrate International Women's Day

Amnesty International Australia invites supporters to come together to celebrate International Women's Day and to campaign against violence towards women.

Ask your friends and family to join you in taking action to stop violence against women - internationally, in the Asia Pacific and in Australia.

You can join our online party or you can host a party at home or at work! Party packs are available following your registration.

More than 100 IWD parties have already been registered. Want to join a party in your local area? Check out the events calendar to find one happening near you.

What's International Women's Day all about?

Celebrated on 8 March each year, International Women's Day recognises the contribution of women around the world.

Thirty years ago the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace.

The date of 8 March was not specifically designated in this resolution however many countries have chosen to observe the celebration on this day.

Since then, International Women's Day has become a global event which gives everyone the opportunity to focus on the current status of women and to demand gender equality under the law, safe and equitable working conditions and freedom from violence in society.

Take action to support women around the world

As part of International Women's Day this year we're asking everyone to take part in one or all three of our actions below:

Help stop rape as a weapon of war in eastern Chad

Help stop violence against Indonesian women domestic workers

Demand the development of a National Plan of Action in Australia

Good news: In next month's newsletter we'll let you know about the new Action Centre we are developing to make it easier for you to take action!

Stand in solidarity with Iranian women

Join Irene Khan, Amnesty International's Secretary General in supporting Iranian Women Rights Defenders.

The One Million Signatures Demanding Changes to Discriminatory Laws campaign aims to put an end to discriminatory laws against women in Iran.

Sign the petition and support Iranian women.

Just three friends

This International Women's Day please forward this newsletter on to just three of your friends, family members or colleagues.

It's a great way to help Amnesty International Australia and it's an even better way to help in the campaign to stop violence against women. Thank you.
