Campaign newsletter June 08

Forward to your friends
Dear friend,

Refugee Week runs between 15-21 June and is a good time to acknowledge recent developments the Australian Government has made to improve the human rights of refugees and asylum seekers. That said, there is still a lot more we need to do.

Amnesty International will continue to campaign for:

- an end to mandatory detention
- the closure of the detention centre on Christmas Island
- an end to policies excising certain offshore areas from the Australian migration zone
- the abolishment of long term and indefinite detention
- support for all asylum seekers and those displaced in refugee camps around the world.

What changes would you like to see for refugees' human rights?

Lao refugees must safely resettle

Around 154 Lao Hmong refugees are being held in an immigration detention centre in northern Thailand in appalling conditions. At least 90 of the group are children, some whom were born in the centre. Call on the Thai authorities to allow them to safely resettle in other countries.

Repatriation for Canadian minor

Omar Khadr has been detained in Guantanamo Bay for six years, since the age of 15. His status as a minor is still not recognised and his treatment continues to violate international human rights standards.

Call on the Canadian Government to seek his repatriation

Law of the land
