Dear friend,

Today, November 8, is Journalist Day in China. Chinese journalist Shi Tao is in a high-security prison for sending an email from his Yahoo! account. It was Yahoo! that provided his details to Chinese authorities.

The Chinese Government has long held a tight grip on local and foreign media, despite guaranteeing "freedom...of the press" for journalists to cover news stories in China in the run-up to and during the August 2008 Olympics.

China's strict media controls and internet surveillance continues.

Chinese leaders have nine months left to make changes and move towards creating a more transparent society that upholds human rights, as promised. more

Six years later, little has been done to ensure that these survivors receive justice and acknowledgement of their hardship. more

Chinese human rights campaigner tortured

He refuses to confess to his 'crime' and has reportedly been teaching other inmates about their human rights. As a consequence he is being tortured. Act now for freedom of expression in China.

UN General Assembly set to halt executions

A petition of over 5 million signatures calling for a universal ban on executions was presented to the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations on November 2. We now welcome the decision of 75 countries to co-sponsor a draft resolution to universally abolish the death penalty. more
