Panahi has long supported the Iranian women's rights movement - the same movement you supported when you signed our petition calling for equality for women in Iranian law. He is considered one of the Iranian New Wave movement's most influential filmmakers.

Panahi was convicted by a Revolutionary Court of "propaganda against the system" in December 2010. He was handed a six year jail sentence and banned from all his artistic endeavours for 20 years, and is currently on bail pending appeal.
