Forward to your friends
Dear friend,

Seventy-five Sri Lankan men who have been held offshore in a detention centre on Nauru, have been accepted as genuine refugees and will be resettled in Australia. The good news reaffirms the Australian Government's commitment to human rights principles.

We hope this move signals an end to Australia’s offshore processing of asylum seekers under the Pacific Solution, and we hope it sends a signal to other governments that such practices are unacceptable.

Find out more about the news and our campaign defending refugees' human rights.

In this edition

Your actions can make a difference

Iranian journalist Maryam Hosseinkhah, who was arrested for publishing articles online promoting women's human and political rights, has been released. Thanks to everyone who took action to appeal for Maryam's release. More about the good news.

Governments should pressure Pakistan this week

Government leaders must give a clear message to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf at a meeting in Europe this week, to call for an end to the human rights violations which have continued in Pakistan, despite the lifting of the State of Emergency last month. More.

Kenyan police must stop using excess force

We condemn the reckless use of lethal force by the Kenyan police, as reports emerge of the killings of at least 12 people. The Government must immediately send clear instructions to stop the violence and prosecute any police officers who have used excessive force against protesters. More.

Donate for refugees’ rights

The dismantling of the Pacific Solution is great news – but our work to end mandatory detention and grant permanent protection to all Temporary Protection Visa holders continues. Make a tax deductible donation today to support this campaign and others.

Take the human rights pledge for China

Expressing an opinion online in China can result in jail, torture and death. People are silenced and what happens in China is often clouded in secrecy. Sign up to take the pledge to stop the Chinese Government and large internet companies restricting freedom of expression on the Internet.
Sign the pledge.

If you've already taken the pledge, take action for detained Beijing human rights activist Hu Jia and his wife, Zeng Jinyan.

Online videos “attack China’s sovereignty”

We saw in the recent Myanmar crisis how important user-generated online videos can be in getting a message out locally and to the rest of the world. The Chinese Government has become threatened by its citizen's access to filming and uploading video content. More about media freedom in China.

Iran’s death by stoning victims are mostly women

Iranian authorities must abolish death by stoning, which is specifically designed to increase the suffering of its victims. Right now nine women and two men in Iran are waiting to be stoned to death. More.

Guantanamo global actions a huge success

January 11 marked a global day of action when our supporters around the world spoke out to call for the shutdown of Guantanamo Bay. After 6 years, approximately 275 detainees still remain. Watch the videos of these events worldwide.

Going to the big day out?

So are we! Have fun and remember to take action for human rights. Come meet us at our stall to find out more about what we do and sign up to our China campaign. For more information contact the action centre in your state.
