Campaign newsletter January 08

Forward to your friends
Dear friend,

At 8.30am this morning outside the U.S. Consulate in Sydney's Martin Place, we staged a public protest calling on the U.S. Government to close down Guantanamo Bay detention centre, which took in its first 'war on terror' detainees on 11 January six years ago.

"All governments have a duty to protect their citizens from terrorist attacks and to bring those who commit such acts to justice. But those very governments also have a duty to act within the law and respect fundamental human rights. Fighting terror with terror does not work, it alienates communities, feed grievances and it fuels fear and violence," said Claire Mallinson, National Director of Amnesty International Australia.

We are not alone in our call. Leaders in the U.S. and across the world have also spoken against Guantanamo. The momentum is building - in the U.S., public opinion polls reveal approval for the U.S. administration policies in the 'war on terror' is slipping.

Today, all over the world, people just like us are standing up in a global day of action. Let's make 2008 the year that Guantanamo Bay closes! Read Claire's full speech and see photos of our activists in orange.

In this edition

Assassination of Benazir Bhutto condemned

The assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister and chairperson of the Pakistan People's Party, plus 15 other party workers, is a tragedy. President Musharraf and his security forces must now exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law in Pakistan. More.

Political violence erupts in Kenya

Kenya's disputed election result has triggered a series of politically-motivated killings by armed youths across the country. We're particularly worried about the developing ethnic-related nature of the violence, which has resulted in more than 75,000 people being internally displaced. About the crisis in Kenya.

Another country abolishes the death penalty

The former Soviet Union territory of Uzbekistan has eliminated the use of the death penalty. We call on the few remaining territories in the former Soviet Union that retain the death penalty, to fully abolish it and to make the entire region a death penalty free zone. More about the good news.

Take further actions

Chinese human rights activist couple are at risk of torture and ill-treatment by Chinese authorities - take action.

Sami al Hajj, an Al Jazeera journalist held in Guantanamo Bay for six years is close to becoming the fifth detainee to take his own life - take action.

Tear down Guantanamo, end U.S. illegal detention

Guantanamo Bay has become a symbol for the U.S.'s disregard for human rights and the rule of law. If we work together with countless other concerned people worldwide, we can put an end to this disgrace. Sign our pledge protesting the U.S. Government's detention centre. When we have 500, 000 signatures - we'll be closer to gaining the power to tear down Guantanamo Bay. Join the online movement to tear it down and end illegal detention.

China swaps gunshots for lethal injections

We strongly criticise China's expansion of their lethal injection program and call on authorities to accelerate the abolition of the death penalty. China's miscarriages of justice and the inhumane nature of executions cannot be solved by changing the method of execution. Read about our concerns about lethal injections.

Hicks should be allowed to lead a normal life

David Hicks had been denied his basic human rights for almost six years in Guantanamo Bay. We're disappointed about the control order that he's now subject to after his release from Adelaide's Yatala prison, and believe it weakens Australia's human rights record. Read more.

Hungary to combat sexual crimes

Sexual violence is a widespread problem in Hungary. We welcome the recent introduction of a protocol for survivors of sexual violence by the Hungarian Government, and hope that violence against women will continue to feature on political agendas across the world. More.
