Anti-Death Penalty Campaign Newsletter May 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Welcome to the May issue of our Anti-Death Penalty Campaign newsletter.

The momentum is growing in the call for an end to the death penalty with an encouraging 25% decrease in executions and death sentences in 2006. The Philippines became the 99th country to abolish the death penalty for ordinary crimes.

"AI is calling for a universal moratorium on execution," said Secretary General Irene Khan, with the release of Amnesty International's annual Death Penalty Statistics, launched in Rome on 27 April 2007.

In this month's newsletter:

Updated statistics

A death penalty free world is possible if key governments are willing to show political leadership, however, we must remain vigilant in our work.

Did you know that as of 1 January 2007:

  • 88 countries are abolitionist for all crimes
  • 11 countries are abolitionist for ordinary crimes only
  • 29 countries are abolitionist in practice
  • and 69 countries are retentionist

Take action

In Japan only the authorities know that an execution will take place. When it does, it usually occurs while Parliament is in recess and unable to debate the issue.

Write to the Japanese Government and urge it to cease all executions immediately.
