We hit 10,000, now let’s keep going

Dear friend,

When we launched our campaign for a Human Rights Act for Australia, we expected our supporters to get behind the call for better human rights protection.

But what we didn’t expect is that supporters like you would end up making over 10,000 individual submissions to the Government's consultation. That's over a quarter of the total made across the country, and more submissions than any other community or organisation, helping to make it the biggest consultation of its kind in Australia - ever.

This really wouldn't have happened without you taking the time to make your submission, whether you did so through our website or via a form or petition we had circulating in the community. With this outpouring of support for a Human Rights Act, the Government simply cannot ignore our call for better human rights protection. Thank you.

The next stage for the consultation process is a series of public hearings at Parliament House in Canberra from today (Wednesday 1 July) to Friday 3 July. Run by the National Human Rights Consultation Committee, the public hearings allow key commentators to present their views on the issues most important to human rights protection in Australia today. Our National Director, Claire Mallinson, will be presenting your views on the final day.

Our team of committed campaigners will also be at the public hearings and keeping you updated via Twitter, Facebook and blogs on our website. You can go to the Amnesty public hearings portal to find out the latest.

If you'd like us to ask a question at the public hearings, please let us know by commenting at the bottom of our public hearings blog page.

Together, we'll achieve better human rights protection for Australia.
