The government has created legislation linking school attendance with welfare payments. A three-year trial of the new laws begins next year in six Aboriginal communities.

This has been tried before. Evidence shows this approach will have little effect on whether children go to school. It also does nothing to address the underlying causes of Indigenous disadvantage and poor educational outcomes.
