Abolish the Death Penalty Campaign newsletter June 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Welcome to the June edition of our Abolish the Death Penalty Campaign newsletter.

This month we've finally received some good news. Since the beginning of 2007 two countries, Albania and Rwanda, have abolished the death penalty, while Australian citizen George Forbes has been released after his death sentence was overturned on appeal in Sudan.

It's great to hear such good news. However, while more than half of the world's countries have abolished the death penalty there's still a lot of work to do. Three young women are at risk of imminent execution in Iraq. Take action by asking the Iraqi authorities to commute the death sentences.

In this month's newsletter:

Death by stoning

Amnesty International has made an urgent appeal to the Iranian Head of the Judiciary to prevent the executions of two people due to be publicly stoned to death on Thursday 21 June 2007. Find out more.

Death penalty facts and figures

Each year thousands of people are executed in a relatively small number of countries. During 2006, at least 1,591 people were executed in 25 countries and at least 3,861 people were sentenced to death in 55 countries. These were only minimum figures; the true figures are certainly higher. Learn more.

Take action

Three young women are at risk of imminent execution in Iraq. The Iraqi President has the power to ratify or commute death sentences, but has not yet decided on the cases of Samar Sa'ad Abdullah, Wassan Talib and Liqa' Qama.

Take action by asking the Iraqi authorities to commute the death sentences.
