Australia has spoken - now let’s Act on it
Dear friend,
Congratulations Australia, we did it! The report from our nation's biggest ever public consultation is out - and it recommends a Human Rights Act for Australia.
This comes after an exhaustive nine month process of face-to-face and online discussion with people all around Australia. More than 80 percent of over 35,000 participants want their rights protected by a federal Human Rights Act.
This is a great achievement, but we've still got a way to go. From here, we need to keep up the pressure on our politicians to let them know we haven't forgotten about rights protection in Australia, and that we expect them to take up the Consultation Committee recommendations, without delay.
Quite simply, Australia has spoken. Now the Government must act on it.
Right now, we've got a unique opportunity for you to speak directly to Father Frank Brennan, Consultation Committee Chair, to ask him about his experiences with the consultation process, and anything you're still wondering about.
Ask Frank your question now
We'll be selecting a number of your questions to take to Frank after his presentation on the human rights consultation at the Canberra Press Club this Wednesday 14 October (broadcast live on ABC TV at 12:30pm). Your questions and Frank's responses will be filmed and posted on our website the following day.
We've only got around 20 minutes with Father Brennan, so please get in with your questions now before submissions close.
Together we stood up in 2009 to clearly tell the Government how we want human rights protected in our country. Please keep in touch with us via twitter and facebook and help us get a Human Rights Act for Australia over the line.
