Stop Violence Against Women Campaign May 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Welcome to the April issue of the Stop Violence Against Women Campaign newsletter! There's no question that violence against women affects us all; women, children, men, entire communities.

This month our focus turns to sexual violence and governments' responsibilities to protect women and to bring perpetrators to justice. Add your voice by taking action to help stop violence against women around the globe.

In this newsletter

Demand protection for Indigenous women in the USA

More than one in three Native American or Alaska Native women will be raped at some point in their lives.

Most do not seek justice because they know they will be met with inaction or indifference. As one support worker said, “Women don’t report because it doesn’t make a difference. Why report when you are just going to be revictimized?”

Sexual violence against women is not only a criminal and social issue it is a human rights abuse.

Maze of Injustice is a new report from Amnesty International highlighting the failure to protect Indigenous women from sexual violence in the USA.

Your local involvement affects global change

Thank you for taking actions on our urgent appeals through this newsletter - it does make a difference!

Another way you can get involved in stopping violence against women is to join your local action group. Groups meet in major capital cities around Australia to campaign towards stopping violence against women.

Most groups meet monthly to discuss the issues, campaign, organise events and to take action!

Contact your local Action Centre to find out the details of groups in your state. New members are always very welcome!

Help stop rape as a weapon of war

Rape is being used in armed conflicts around the world to intimidate, conquer and control women and their communities.

In Sudan and eastern Chad an armed conflict has been raging since 2003. It is impossible to know how many women have been raped since the armed conflict began but we know it is in the thousands.

The most recent global day of action for Darfur on 29 April saw people around the world demanding protection for the people of Darfur. While the news that the government of Sudan have accepted United Nations troops is as signal that international pressure is effective, we must continue this pressure.

Please support Amnesty International Australia in our efforts to call for the immediate deployment and reinforcement of troops to protect the women and girls of Darfur and eastern Chad from sexual violence.

Take action - in our new Action Centre - to stop rape as a weapon of war in Sudan and eastern Chad.
