Campaign newsletter August 2007

Forward to your friends

Dear friend,

Hi! Welcome to Amnesty International Australia's new fortnightly newsletter.

We've combined all our campaign newsletters into one to ensure you stay up-to-date with Amnesty International campaign news and events.

Amnesty International doesn't exist without its members, so tell us what you think and send us news or reviews of events and activities in your area. We rely on your energy and actions and we'd love you to share them with us. This is your newsletter, so be a part of it!

In this edition

Campaign for freedom of expression in China

Amnesty International Australia recently launched a new campaign focusing on internet repression in China. With the 2008 Beijing Olympics less than a year away we have a unique opportunity to use the interest the Olympics will generate to help create a more transparent society in China. Learn more about the campaign, check out our blog and find out how you can get involved.

Use the internet to stop internet repression

Cut and paste some html code from our website and post a tag cloud on your own website, blog or Myspace page. Speak out and let the world know what words the Chinese Government won't let its own citizens search for! Use the internet to speak out against internet repression.

Blogging for a better world

We've started blogging for a better world. Mike Otterman is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney and has recently published a book "American Torture", which looks at the effects of state-sponsored torture.

Mike is our guest blogger for the Torture and Terror campaign. Check out Mike's latest post and learn more about the Torture and Terror campaign

Find out about our other campaigns

You may not be aware of some of the other campaigns Amnesty International works on, like our Campaign Against Torture and Terror or our Stop Violence Against Women campaign. Check out all of our campaigns.

Making a difference is easy

You may not be aware of all of the things you can do on our website. Check out our online action centre where you can register and log in and make a real difference with a click of your mouse. You can write letters and send emails to support human rights defenders around the world.

Hooking up with others is easy too!

You can also use the website to find out where your nearest regional Action Centre is. It's where you can find out about Amnesty International's work and events in your area, join groups, sign up for volunteering, organise stalls and meet up with other like-minded folk.

You can attend seminars, cook up a storm in a bake off, or join an Amnesty fun run group. Come along to film nights, help out at music or film festivals, and meet up with other people interested in defending human rights.

Volunteer or work for human rights

Over 5,000 volunteers actively support the work of Amnesty International Australia - it's a great way to have fun, learn new skills, meet lots of interesting people and make a significant contribution to defending human rights.

We're always looking for new volunteers. If you've got some time or skills you'd like to share you can go to your local Action Centre web pages to find out more about volunteering and campaigning activities in your area.

Learn more about Amnesty International Australia or check out our current vacancies on our website.

Don't forget to let us know what you think and send us news or reviews of events and activities in your area.

Thank for your support. We couldn't do what we do without you.
